Patras is the third largest city of Greece, situated in northern Peloponnese, 215 km to the W of Athens. The city, which now counts a quarter of a million inhabitants, has a history of 4 millennia and in Roman times it used to be a cosmopolitan centre of the eastern Mediterranean. The city is famous for its Carnival, which is also one of the biggest tourist attractions of the city. The Carnival of Patras takes place every spring and its main features include extravagant balls and parades. Patras has a really nice Mediterranean climate, with cool yet humid summers and mild winters. In 2006 Patras has been elected European Capital of Culture. There are two possible explanations for the name of Patras. One is mythological, from Patreus the city's legendary settler. The other is an etymological one: in Greek, the word Patra is related to the word Patrís, which means homeland. Patras is nowadays divided into an upper (older and more picturesque) and a lower part, connected by flights of steps, as well as streets. Tourists in Patras can find lots of shopping centers, pubs, cafes, discos, nice restaurants and many educational and cultural facilities (among them a well-known university, colleges, theatres, galleries and cinemas). The port of Patras has outstanding car-ferry links with the Ionian Islands and the main Adriatic ports of Italy. Book a Patras ferry ticket with the operators ANEN, Superfast Ferries and Minoan Lines.
