The Mariehamn ferry port is a narrow isthmus between two harbours and bays and welcomes a large amount of ferry traffic between Finland and Sweden. Mariehamn is the capital of Aland, an autonomous territory under Finnish sovereignty. It was named after Marie Alexandrovna, the Empress consort of Alexander II of Russia.
Mariehamn is an attractive town boasting a multitude of green spaces and shoreside forests. Visitors can discover the long history of Aland from stone age to the present at the Aland Museum, the Aland Art Museum is ideally located in the same building. The Aland Maritime Museum allows visitors to relive Aland's maritime long history and exhibits ship models and figureheads. The Museum Ship Pommern, moored near the Mariehamn ferry port, is the only cargo sailing ship of its kind in the world to be preserved in its original condition, it holds exhibition rooms of the life on board.
