Found in the north-western corner of Crete, Kissamos has a fishing harbour and ferry port with regular arrivals from the Peloponnese via Kythira. 26 miles west of Chania, this charming seaside town is officially known as Kastelli-Kissamou (often abbreviated simply to Kastelli) after the Venetian castle that used to dominate the town. Kissamos has developed into quite a large town which has embraced tourism but is not spoilt by it, with local trade also based on the production of oil and the famous Kissamos wine.
Kissamos is beside an excellent sandy beach and enjoys sunshine most of the year with plenty of taverns and bars to relax in, including along the seafront promenade. Kissamos is home to an interesting museum, which is located in the old Venetian governor's palace, and there have been important archaeological finds in the area. The nearby remains of the ancient city of Polyrinnia with many ruins set upon a hill with magnificent views.
