The ancient city of Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt, and home to the country's largest and busiest port, handling 80% of Egypt's imports and exports. The ferry port is visited by many international ferries, with services to other Mediterranean countries such as Italy and Greece.
There are few destinations in the world as rich in history as Alexandria; founded by Alexander the Great in 331BC it was home to Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and the Library of Alexandria, the largest library of the ancient world as well as being Egypt's capital for a thousand years. In more recent times, Alexandria has grown as a major international shipping centre, and is a key port for many goods coming to Europe. Of course, Alexandria is also a hugely popular tourist resort, with the beaches a forest of parasols in the summer and thousands visiting the antiquities every year.
