Favignana is the largest of the Egadi Islands, three islands off the western coast of Sicily. Favignana has good, frequent ferry connections with the other islands and with Trapani. The landscape of Favignana is often compared to that of a butterfly. Two flat stretches of land lie as wings on either side of a high rocky spine, which is topped by a decaying fortress. Ferries arrive at Favignana town, the one densely populated area on the island. The town is situated on the eastern side of the island, which is connected to the western side by a road-tunnel through the rocky spine which divides the two plains.

It is a lovely place, with a real local atmosphere and a friendly attitude to the tourists who arrive. is the centre of the island community and after the afternoon siesta it comes to life. A good range of food shops open their doors, from a fishmonger, selling tuna with today's price scrawled on a paper notice, to souvenir food shops for tourists selling all kinds of local specialities (frequently tuna).

If you need to relax and soak in the sun, there are plenty of small beaches for you to choose from. Lido Burrone is a wide sandy beach accompanied by a bar and a restaurant making it a great spot if you are visiting with children. Sunbeds and parasols are available to rent.

If you are after something a little different, one of the best bathing spots is Cala Rossa, a bay enclosed in a rocky coastline. This can be difficult to reach so may not be suitable if you are visiting with children, but it is worth it once you reach the beach.

Favignana port facilities
