Built as a result of the Asturias' industrial revolution towards the end of the 19th century, the port of Gijón is one of the largest in northern Spain and provides direct access to the western and central Iberian Peninsula as well as the city of Oviedo. The port is currently going through a period of expansion to allow it to handle even more traffic and has excellent road and rail links to central and western Spain.
Gijón has a rich cultural heritage and there are many museums to go and visit, including a railway museum (great for families with young children and the young at heart) and several avant-garde museums. The city's marina is the home of several important sports facilities and there are also many sports facilities throughout Gijon. Finally, there are 9 beaches running along the coast of the town, providing ample space for any holiday maker looking to take a relaxing break.
