Gytheion is a town of Laconia in Greece. It is the largest and most important town in Mani, in the south Peloponnese, Greece. Historically Gytheion was the seaport of ancient Sparta, and remained an important port for centuries until levelled by an earthquake in 375AD. Gytheio was thus a small settlement until the Greek War of Independence started a long period of growth, culminating in the rebirth of the port in the 1960s, with regular ferry services to Kythira and Crete beyond.
Gytheio is today a wonderfully picturesque port lined with restaurants and cafés, surrounded by traditional Greek architecture and home to the fishing vessels that bring in some of the seafood cuisine that Gytheion is rightly noted for.
