Getting to/from Umeå
Getting to Umeå is easier than you might think. It's just an hour's flight away from Sweden's capital city Stockholm with connecting flights to major cities around the world. Umeå's own airport is conveniently located a short 10 minute drive from the city centre. Regular bus and rail links provide easy access to southern Sweden and Europe while the city is located on the E4 highway that runs the length of the country. Additionally, a ferry runs regularly to Vaasa, Finland, across the Gulf of Bothnia.
Getting around Umeå
One of the best things about Umeå is that almost everything is within easy walking or cycling distance. Most people living in Umeå own a bicycle and it is by far the most popular way of getting around. Not surprising then that the city has over 180 kilometres of bicycle paths! The shortest sea route from Sweden to Finland is between Umeå and Vaasa. You can travel between the cities with a ferry, which operates all year round.
From the Vaasa city center you'll get to the Port of Vaasa by car in five minutes, and the ferry trip from Vaasa to Umeå takes only about four hours. Thanks to the ferry you can also travel by car along the Blue Road, which goes all the way from Norway to Russia.
