The principle port for Rome, and consequently one of Italy's busiest ferry ports, Civitavecchia is the main starting point for sea travel from central Italy to Sardinia and Barcelona. Civitavecchia itself is a bustling port town on Italy's western coast in the Latium region of the Rome province, often extremely busy with travellers making their way to or from the `Eternal City'.
The name Civitavecchia translates as `Ancient Town' which is reflected in the town with its mixture of old and new buildings, unfortunately though during the two World Wars, much of Civitavecchia was heavily damaged from bombing, including many of the historic buildings. Those that survived were renovated and reopened to the public; the most popular are the Forte Michelangelo, The cathedral of San Francesco d'Assisi, the Terme della Ficoncella (baths) and the old Roman Harbour, and the archaeological museum houses many findings from local archaeological sites. Of course the biggest attraction of Civitavecchia is visiting Rome, 80km to the south. The capital city of Italy is one of the cultural capitals of the world, home to famous architecture, landmarks, nightlife and cuisine.

Unfortunately the directions to the ferry terminal and check in instructions when you get there were limited and there was nothing specific for a caravan which would have been useful. We had also expected a roll on and roll off ferry and were horrified to see coach and lorry drivers reversing on. We were instructed to drive on but were then concerned about reversing off in Rome. i must say the crew were clearly very experienced and helpful speaking English and helping me reverse off telling me to turn left or right as required. Having now experienced the ferry crossing i would recommend it to all and would be happy to use it and other crossings abroad again. We booked a cabin suite which was great to have some space to ourselves.
