Alexandroupolis is a Greek city located about 25 or so miles away from the Turkish border. This city has seen many battles and survived almost 80 years of war - from the Russo-Turkish War in 1877 to the end of World War II in 1945! A busy city of nearly 300,000 inhabitants, the nearby fishing villages of Makri and Dikela are great day excursions where you can relax and take in typical Greek village life, perhaps with some Greek specialities like Ouzo (the famous Greek liquor) and baklava, a sweet, sticky treat made with pastry, nuts and honey...
In the main city centre is the Ecclesiastical Art Museum, which is a hotspot for travellers and tourists alike who want to absorb the Greek religious culture and admire the truly beautiful paintings. If that's not for you take a trip to Dadia Forest, which is a perfect place to just sit back, relax, and have a pleasant picnic - or a typically extravagant Greek feast if you like!
