The ferry port of Ancona is located on Italy's Adriatic coast, in the central region of Marche. The city of Ancona is easily accessible by rail and has roads running directly from Milan, Bologna and Rome that all run through or near the city. Ancona was founded from Syracuse about 390 BC. Its name is a modified transliteration of the Greek word for "elbow"; in fact, originally, the harbour to the east of the town was protected only by the promontory on the north, shaped like an elbow.
Ancona houses many amazing sights to explore, such as the marble Arch of Trajan located at the causeway on top of the harbour wall. The arch is on a high podium approached by a wide flight of steps and is an impressive landmark for arriving ships.
The town also features the Lazaretto and the fine late Gothic buildings of the churches of San Francesco and San Agostino and the Cathedral church of Saint Ciriaco, a fine Romanesque building in grey stone. Also interesting is the archaeological museum, which contains interesting pre-Roman objects from tombs in the district, and two Roman beds with fine decorations in ivory.

Patras is the third largest city of Greece, situated in northern Peloponnese, 215 km west of Athens. Patras boasts a long history going back to Aniquity and Roman times. The Carnival of Patras, one of the biggest tourist attractions of the city, takes place every spring and features include extravagant balls and parades.
Patras is very well connected. You can reach Patras from Athens by train. The journey lasts about 3.5-4 hours. The train terminal in Athens is called the "Larissa station". If you prefer to travel by ferry there are more than 50 departures and arrivals within the week. But the best and quickest way to travel from Athens to Patras is by coach - with departures approximately every half an hour.

The crossing went well, friendly staff and good food. However, when checking in at Minoan Lines we requested a cabin which we had forgotten when booking the crossing. The lady at the desk indicated that this was possible for an amount of € 110, - per person for a 2 person cabin. On the Grimaldi Lines (€ 70,- per cabin), however, there was a leaflet from Grimaldi and Minoan Lines stating that on a 2nd crossing there is a discount on the cabin of 30 percentage. The lady at the desk was not too friendly (very rude!) That this only applies to crossings within Italy and not for the crossing to Greece. This can not be found in the brochure, but the lady kept her point of view that it was a cabin for € 220, -. The result was that we were forced to spend the night on a very cold ferry, not only in the hall with the chairs but also in the lounge and also in the dining room.

Arrived at Ancona to find ferry was 4.5 hours late - claimed in response to my email complaint that a text was sent but never received it. Delay was due to it taking that long to load trucks - surely it is not a surprise that trucks will be using the route. I know from someone else who was complaining to the Receptionist onboard that the same thing happened last year. Minoan need to build longer into their schedules so it is not the customer who is inconvenienced. I do not believe Minoan understand the implications of their awful service - our ferry was so late that 2 French students had to get a lift with us as they had missed the last bus to Athens. The whole experience was extremely disappointing. Minoan have offered 25 per cent off a future booking in response to my complaint but not sure I want to enjoy its 'service' again!
